Now Prototype It is a fork of the GOV.UK’s Prototype Kit. While NPI is for everyone, it’s based on GOV.UK’s work, so we’ve made sure it comes with GOV.UK prototype compatibility.

Why switch to Now Prototype It?

The GOV.UK Prototype Kit is a hugely useful tool for many government departments. We’re building on that work to create a fully supported and maintained successor.

Improvements include:

• Faster iteration for designers via our in-browser editor, so you can apply changes quickly and easily.
• Faster setup via custom setup configurations (called variants in NPI).
• Easier sharing and collaboration via our self-contained prototype sharing platform. No need to use Heroku or other third-party tools!
• More customisation with our improved plugin features and settings.
• Faster plugin creation for developers using our improved plugin validation tool.
• Fully supported and maintained, and in active development.

Creating a GOV.UK-compatible prototype

We know how important prototyping is to UK Government departments, so we've made it as easy as possible to make the switch to NPI.

To make this process as familiar as possible, we’ve created a variant (a custom setup configuration) that’s compatible with GOV.UK Frontend.

You can create a new NPI prototype with a GOV.UK-compatible variant via a single command:

npx nowprototypeit create --variant @nowprototypeit/govuk-frontend-adaptor the-name-of-your-prototype

Note: replace "the-name-of-your-prototype" with the name you want your prototype to have.

Sharing GOV.UK prototypes

Users can host NPI prototypes in all the same places as the GOV.UK Prototype Kit.

Alternatively, you can use the experimental NPI sharing platform from within the NPI kit.
